In 1985 Yıldırım Akbulut stated: “a new law empowers us to arrest people suspected of homosexuality for a term of 24 hours... We don't believe that homosexuality is not one of the anti-social tendencies. We have to be tough against persons who have such perverted thoughts and tendencies. The number of such persons increases daily. They became the cancer of society. No segment of our society approves people who hold such thoughts and tendencies... We therefore shall introduce measures against these people everywhere, but especially in the big cities”
